Commander's Notes

The National JWV Convention is coming up August 23–28. National is still working on being able to provide Zoom attendance for pieces of the convention, for a charge of $75.

JWV National is in the midst of a change in the management of the National office and the Board of Directors for both the museum and the National office. The management is being performed by an outside professional management company. National staff has been further reduced as of August 1st.

We have new information about our two JWV Posts, 64 and 65, joining the JWV SW Department. I, as the outgoing JWV Department of NV Commander, had a Zoom meeting with the SW Department Executive Committee. Several items were agreed upon moving forward. Future general meetings of the new Department will be three times a year and involve the Post Commanders and one other Post member. The meetings will occur in October 2026 to take nominations for the Department 2027 officers. January 2027, March/April 2027 and October 2027 are the future dates of the 2027 yearly meetings. Two meetings will be by Zoom each year. However, the January meeting will be in person for the 2027–28 election of officers and installation. The January meeting will be held for two days here in Las Vegas. Officers will serve for two years.

The Department Executive Board will meet the 2nd Thursday of the month at 5:00 PM by Zoom.

Starting in September, if we do not have a scheduled speaker, one of our own veterans can have the floor to talk about their military experience. Why did you join? What did you do while you served? How long, and what are your general feelings about the experience? Please keep it to about 15 minutes. I will go first, and month by month we can take volunteers.

Hopefully all of our members have paid their 2026 dues by now. If not, please get them in ASAP either online or give them to our Quartermaster. The 2027 dues for our members will be on the agenda for the next general meeting, September 27th.

Post 64 will have no general meeting at the end of August.

“It may be that ‘the voice of the people is the voice of God’ in fifty-one cases out of a hundred; but in the remaining forty-nine it is quite as likely to be the voice of the devil, or, what is still worse, the voice of a fool.”
— Theodore Roosevelt, letter to his sister Anna “Bamie” Roosevelt, June 8, 1884, written after the Republican National Convention in Chicago.
